Scaling a company isn’t just about selling more. Eventually, the systems, processes—and even the people who helped get you there—can become the things holding the company back.

In this From The Ground Up Show: Topics episode, Charbel Louis Karam explains what scaling from a first acquisition with 9 employees into an organization of more than 2,000 people has actually required.

Along the way, the business outgrew nearly everything.

Paper notes gave way to Excel. Excel gave way to small-business software. Eventually, that software could no longer support the scale of the organization. Leadership roles changed, too. Someone can be exceptional during one stage of growth and still be the wrong person for the company’s next stage.

Charbel speaks candidly about recognizing when systems must be replaced, when leadership needs to change, and when people who have been with the company from the beginning may no longer fit where it is going.

At one point, the company intentionally paused its expansion. The leadership team reevaluated its structure, invested in larger systems, and recruited people capable of operating a company 10 or 20 times larger. That pause ultimately created the capacity for the next stage of growth.

Charbel also describes the physical scale of the transformation: from a 1,200-square-foot first laboratory to 130,000 square feet of manufacturing, with planned expansion that would take the total footprint beyond 500,000 square feet.

Entrepreneurship isn’t about making every decision correctly. It’s about making enough good decisions to outweigh the bad ones—and recognizing mistakes quickly enough to make the next decision.

Growth puts pressure on everything. The challenge is ensuring that leadership, people, and systems can grow with it.
